How Many Suits Should You Own?

If there is one thing that every man should have in their wardrobe, it is a suit. However, the age-old question keeps coming up. Exactly how many suits should a man have? There is no one correct way to answer this question. However, we always suggest at least a navy and grey suit to start because they are the most versatile. You can also decide based on your lifestyle and what you do for a living. Some professions require a suit to be worn every day in which case, you will want more than two suits in your wardrobe. You can never have too many!

Will You Actually Need One?

In terms of a specific number, you may have to account for the type of events that you attend and how frequently you go out. For the average man, a bare minimum of one to two suits is generally considered safe. At one point or another, you will probably attend a formal event such as a wedding or gala, a funeral, or even date night. This will be when you will have to dust off that suit that you never wear. So yes, you will need one.

Are you someone that wears a suit every day to work? If so, you will probably need more than one. Your average lawyer will have around two to three suits in their wardrobe, and corporate executives have around five. One of the concerns that comes with having a limited number of suits is that other people may start to notice when you repeatedly wear them, so having more in the wardrobe will absolutely help.

What Should I Buy First?

Your first suit should be a navy suit, which is arguably the most versatile color around and looks great on everyone. The initial inkling is to purchase a black suit because the popular narrative surrounding black is that it matches with everything. However, a black suit only really works for black tie events, funerals, and driving limos. Keep reading if you’re looking for something close to black that we think is a better option.

It’s important to remember that you want to focus on being classy as opposed to trendy. Trends will come and go, but the classics are timeless. Following this tip will help you get the most use out of your suits.

Grey

Another suit that you will want to consider is a grey suit. Anything from charcoal to light grey will work. Grey and navy suits tend to compliment each other very well, especially if the right fabrics are chosen. This will allow you to mix and match the jackets and trousers to create a few different outfits. With the amount of combinations that you can make, you could potentially be set for four out of five days of the week. Your shirt and tie choice can completely change the look as well, so keep that in mind when creating your outfits.

Be Creative

Once you have the basics, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and break the mold from your standard suits. Sometimes, maroon, browns, or even a dark green can work just as well. At some point wearing the same colors, even if you alternate the articles of clothing, can become boring. However, with these alternative colors you want to be sure they work well with you hair color and skin tone. Creativity can often be your best friend, and you should embrace it.

To summarize, having at least one to two suits will be a safe bet for your wardrobe. Remember that the colors you buy are not the only suits that you can wear. You can mix and match the articles of clothing that you have as appropriate. This will create even more outfits to wear and will help your budget.

If you have a decent collection of shirts, putting your suit on each morning will be significantly less effortless. Your outfit can feel just like new if you switch your tie and shirt every now and again. The entire point is that you have a versatile wardrobe, and not one that is mundane. Do not be afraid to let your creativity run wild, and be sure to have fun as you explore through your wardrobe. The possibilities are endless.
