What To Know When Suiting Up

5 IMPORTANT RULES FOR WEARING A SUIT

By: Jeffrey Scott

Wearing a suit is a big deal! It’s usually for a special occasion like a wedding, an important meeting at work, or maybe a date night out so we feel it’s important to point out a few things you should know so that you look your best in your suit.

  1. SLEEVE LENGTH - The rule of thumb is to make sure your sleeves are short enough that you are showing 1/4’ - 1/2” of your shirt cuff. Generally, you can achieve that by measuring 5” up from the tip of your thumb and hemming the sleeve to that point.

  2. PANT LENGTH - While this can be personal preference, there are still guidelines to follow. If the pants are too short, you’ll look like you are wearing your little brothers suit. On the other hand, if they are too long it will make you look shorter and heavier. We recommend a slight break to no break in the dress pant. The ‘break’ is the crease at the front of the pant caused by hitting the top of the shoe. Our personal preference is to have the trouser just graze the top of your shoe. 3. JACKET LENGTH - The length of your suit jacket should always cover your buttocks in the back and fall right near your knuckles in the front. It’s common for the front of the jacket to be slightly longer than the back, but not by much.

  4. BUTTON RULE - Years ago, the King of England was too overweight to button the bottom button of his suit so it carried on to be a long time rule in the suiting world. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR BOTTOM BUTTON OPEN! This rule goes for the vest as well. In addition, fastening the top button when standing and opening when sitting is a classic gentleman’s rule.

  5. FIND A TAILOR - If a custom suit is not an option for you at the moment, be sure to find a good tailor. This is the most important tip we can give. After purchasing an off the rack suit, it’s extremely important to have a tailor work their magic to make it look as good as possible!
