Q & A: How Often Should you Dry Clean Your Suits?
Jeff explains his rules behind cleaning a suit and just how many times a year you should send them to the dry cleaners.
Dry cleaning has become a common practice among men who wear suits and while it seems like the best option, it is actually more destructive than you realize.
The large metal presses and chemicals from most dry cleaners can actually damage/melt the wool fibers in your jacket. This can also cause an unwanted shine on areas like the shoulders, lapels, and elbows. This process will take life out of your garment.
Ideally, the best course of action for any suit or jacket is to let them hang out in the open for a day or two, free from the garment bag. By doing this, it will allow the wrinkles to fall out and odors to fade. If your suit has an odor that is challenging to remove, you can use fabric-safe deodorizer. To remove wrinkles, we recommend a steamer. The hot steam will also help sanitize your garment.
Lastly, if you're a messy eater like me and attract stains on your suits, try spot cleaning first. Organic dry cleaners can easily remove stains by spot cleaning as a safer alternative to dry cleaning. If all else fails, It’s OK to dry clean your garments once or twice a year max.
